Every so often I meet someone who I feel I’ve always known. We introduce ourselves and then begin where we finished. Thishappened when I met Kendall Brown of Eclatante Design at a beach wedding last summer. And so I did what I do. I went to her mother’s home to photograph love.
I miss my grandmother… these touched a special place in my heart.

Dearest Kendall,
I am in love with the memory of this day together. I cannot thank you enough for asking. And then I’m reminded…to ask for what I want. And for this lesson, I am so very grateful to you and your family. big hug ~ Amy

humans have for a moment – this very moment – to stay.” ~ Sam Abell
I am co-teaching with the fabulous Anna Kuperberg in San Francisco on March 30-31. The two day Anna + Amy Workshop has two spots remaining. Our workshop is available to professional photographers based on portfolio review.
Maybe it’s the snow and the soft cloudy days nestling me…
Maybe it’s my delayed reaction to a new year, a chance to trace my time and reorient my compass…
Maybe I’m savoring a sense of completion…
Maybe and most likely, I’m simply grateful.
I hear my husband and my son bantering in the next room, snippets of laughter and ever~so~earnest questions waft like the chocolate chip cookies I baked. Homework is done. Folded laundry rests. Neat white reminder bundles stack on the stairs. And the slideshow below…it rests, at home on this journal, complete.
Shadow and Grace chronicles 22 years of my photography. It starts with the first worth~a~darn photograph I made as a student in Kentucky. It ends exactly this time last year after my husband received his new kidney. What you might want to know before viewing this lengthy piece it this…some find the content challenging. I offer a very personal no~holds~barred collection of photographs. I trace time by revisiting my years at newspapers, my challenges of coping with my now 14-year-old son’s Cowden Syndrome, my husband’s Polycystic Kidney Disease and running a small business. Some folks have asked how I photographed my family, particularly my son’s early years. My answer? I knew then and know now, one day these images would be needed for him to trace his time.
What I see now, a year later, are beautiful laundry piles on the same steps lulled by the gentle snores of my family.
Oh, Amy, I don’t know why it took me so long to find this but these pictures are amazing. I’ve watched it over and over and over. Now I’m on a crying jag. The story you can tell with one picture is beyond belief. I love you! I hope to see you one of these days.
I don’t know why it took me this long to see this, but at least I did. Thanks for sharing the journey.

Oh, Amy, what a wonderful gift to us all. We are blessed to have our family photograph on the wall. I hope to see you in the fall when I return from my summer sojourn.
Who knew that honesty and trust could be so beautiful? The honest emotions captured, combined with the trust that made these photographs possible, creating beautiful scenes of life.

Hi Sandra,
Your words touch me beyond telling. I am sending you a hug right now. ~ Amy
I am in tears. I couldn’t sleep tonight. So at 4:37am I do what any photogs do at this hour, I surf the internet. Whatever site I was on before, I’m glad it brought me to you. Your images are beautiful. I viewed the slideshow, rewinded it and viewed it again pausing and absorbing each image and quote. Thank you, for sharing with us.
You have beautiful photos on your website, but thank you for the chance to see again the visual poetry of “Kentucky Amy” again. Wonderful, open, honest Amy pictures. What a treat. Thanks.
I was captivated by your ability to tell stories through still pictures. Far more powerful than moving pictures, it requires the viewer to grasp what is happening and fill in the blanks for themselves. Thank you for sharing these pieces of your life with us. Only a wonderful heart could have put this together.
Truly stunning work. I was mesmerized. The first song, in particular, really brought out the emotional content of the work. I would love to know the name… beautiful, Amy.
Simply stunning. What incredible work. I am just in awe.

Oh Amy. What an amazing legacy. I have tears streaming down my face as I write this. What a brave and strong, woman, wife and mother you are to not look away and to give your family the gift, as your son so eloquently stated, of being seen.

I wrote about the Foundation Workshop a year ago when I attended as a team leader. Heading to Dallas is somewhat of a yearly pilgrimage. Tomorrow I head back to Texas and meet a new team of photographers.
The five day photography immersion experience started by Huy Nguyen, former Dallas Morning News photojournalist, is devoted to teaching wedding photographers to be better visual storytellers by former news photographers Greg Gibson,David Murray,Brooks Whittington and Tyler Wirken.
Hi David,
It’s a gray morning, soft and cuddly. Daffodils prepare to pop. A purple and white snowdrop and crocus blanket spreads under the maple tree. The house is quiet. I am glad you are my friend. ~ Amy
What a beautiful year of kindness and love amidst the world’s deep difficulties. I am so fortunate to have photographed so many fabulous weddings last year. I send my thanks to the lovely couples who chose my studio to document their day. As our world community experiences great challenge, images of loving kindness may perhaps serve to balance, perhaps tip, the scale. Accompanied by my stalwart ally, friend and second photographer David Bick, we witnessed truly amazing celebrations.
Photographing how we care and love each other has, for me, the effect of slicing to the heart of the matter, even amongst the concern. In these images I see hope. I see humor. I see delight. In this small way I hold the light. I hope you enjoy this little movie of some of my favorites.
On a very chilly morning Megan and Dave visited my studio for an impromptu engagement shoot at my snowbound studio. We galloped in the snow and made some snow angels. I watched as cheeks turned red with mitten~y hands reaching for each other. I watched kisses and giggles and piggyback rides. I am so excited to photograph Megan and Dave’s wedding in at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club in Annapolis, Maryland.
Congratulations sweeties.

New York sweeties, Lara and Michael, were married in Annapolis this weekend. Inspired by this their ineffable charm and delightful style, we set up a studio at their Chesapeake Bay Beach Club reception. Equally charming and delightful families and guests received prints. Carefully cutting prints with an array of groovy scissors, the guests created an on-site book for Lara and Michael.
We send a huge huge thank you to planner Leslie Maloney of Wedding Savvy and the reception staff for their support in making this portable on-site studio a reality.
To Lara and Michael, your wedding your style, your charm , your love, oh…I could go on and on…waxing eloquently about your yummy wedding…just this friends…I am inspired all over again. Stay tuned for more of Lara and Michael’s pictures. If you are one of the delightful guests you may order pictures here.

Hi John,
Have fun with your booth. I am glad you are inspired. Please send me the link when you post your images. Good Luck, Amy

Hi Beverly,
Thanks for your comment. Since there were two of us and we were in the same room as the reception events it was a matter of covering both the scheduled toasts and dances with the booth simultaneously. The booth was set up after cocktails and during dinner. We used a Sony dye sub printer.
Amy, these are wonderful! Love the milk photo and general attitude, fun and freshness of the rest! This is great inspiration for my photo booth in 3 weeks : ) hugs, John
Very cool! I love the photobooth idea. How difficult was it to pull that off at a wedding and still be able to catch everything else going on? What kind of printer did you use for on the spot printing?
amyAugust 27, 2009 - 8:25 am
Hi Kate, The photobooth studio is just a blast. Dave and I love love love it. It adds such a great element to wedding coverage. I hope to see you soon. love, Amy
Oh, I love this post! I love the whole blog, in fact ~ You are on my Google Reader! These photobooth images are full of so much joy and spunk and love. They’re wonderful. I especially love the warm, light tones to them, too. Ah, Amy, you are so talented!
[...] Here’s a funny picture of the bride and groom — Amy set up a big “photo booth” next to the bar and the guests had a blast dressing up and being funny. You can check out some more pictures on Amy Deputy’s Blog! [...]
you rock. someday maybe we’ll hang out… until then, I will just keep you in my “fabulous book”. (you might remember me from Carrie & Ryan’s wedding, I tried to be incognito)
Neon cotton candy coated little lips. Hundreds of smiles and the latest dance moves decorated the gym. For 10 years members of the Baltimore National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) have brought ketchup and snowballs, bubbles and brownies to the St. Vincent’s Center in Timonium, MD. This year was no different as 45 NACE volunteers hosted 70 children and 30 staff for the summer picnic. St. Vincent’s Center offers residential treatment services for neglected and abused children as well as local and national child abuse prevention services.
Faces were transformed with paint. Fingernails were buffed and polished. “It is one afternoon where they can just be kids having fun in the summertime, no pressure, no lessons. It is amazing to watch them all dancing as if they did not have a care in the world,” said Dulany Noble, event organizer and Baltimore NACE Community Service Chair.
And the volunteers…they danced too. For information about service opportunities at St. Vincent’s Center contact Ellen Torres at 410-252-4000 x1629.
